Charles Dance est un acteur britannique né en 1946. Il débute sa carrière au théâtre, où il est régulièrement en représentation durant les années 1970. Il affectionne aussi bien les pièces de William Shakespeare (il est alors membre de la Royal Shakespeare Company) que celles d’Anton Tchekhov. Remarqué pour son jeu complet et profond, le comédien est bientôt sollicité par la télévision pour jouer dans diverses séries. Le cinéma lui tend enfin les bras en 1981, lorsqu’il décroche un rôle dans Rien que pour vos yeux de John Glen. Il enchaîne ensuite, dans des registres très variés, L’Enfant sacré du Tibet, Alien 3 de David Fincher, Last Action Hero ou encore Désaccord parfait d’Antoine de Caunes. En 2004, Charles Dance scénarise et réalise son premier film, Les Dames de Cornouailles, avec Judi Dench et Maggie Smith. Il n’oublie pas pour autant sa passion originelle, et remonte sur les planches en 2007 pour rencontrer le succès dans la pièce de William Nicholson Shadowlands. Depuis 2011, il incarne dans la série Game of Thrones le personnage de Tywin Lannister, plus puissant des seigneurs des Sept couronnes et patriarche intransigeant de la famille Lannister, qui mène les siens d’une main de fer.
